The number of foreign tourists who visited Spain in May 2022 was multiplied by five compared to the same month last year to reach 6.97 million visitors, this is less than in May 2019 but they spent 8.02 billion euros, or +1.4 billion euros compared to the same month in 2021, and almost as much as the 8.14 billion euros in May 2019, according to official data.
The Spanish Ministry of Tourism revealed the figures for the month of May 2022 on Monday July 4. And they are rather good since the expenses of foreign holidaymakers are flirting with the figures for 2019, before the covid-19 pandemic. Nearly 7 million tourists therefore visited Spain for just over 8 billion in expenditure. The average expenditure per traveler was 1152 euros compared to 1028 euros in 2019.
"So far, and before the start of the summer months, Spain has almost recovered eight out of ten international tourists compared to 2019. The good prospects we have for the high season, based on bookings already confirmed , allow us to affirm that international tourism will continue to recover in the coming months, even in the current context of rising prices, because our country is very competitive and that rising prices are a global phenomenon"said in a statement the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto.

Over the first five months of 2022, attendance reached 22.7 million visitors (i.e. 78% of 2019 figures) and spending per tourist (including transport) is close to the pre-pandemic level with 22,776 million. euros (i.e. 99% of 2019). The average stay in May was 6.5 days compared to 6.3 days in May 2019.
It should be noted that the British are the main tourists in Spain: 1.7 million (23.7%), they mainly visited the Balearic Islands, Andalusia and Catalonia. The Germans follow (975,241, mainly in the Balearic Islands) and the French (925,994, Catalonia and Andalusia). It should be noted that the Swiss are the only ones to have come more in 2022 than in 2019 (156,503 against 131,098).
Among the favorite destinations of foreign tourists, the Balearic Islands come first (23.4%) ahead of Catalonia (21%) and Andalusia (14.9%). Knowing that the expenditure of foreign tourists in May 2022 is higher than 2019 in the Balearic Islands, Andalusia, the Canaries and the region of Valencia.
