Getting around Menorca
While public transport is not quite as comprehensive as in neighbouring Mallorca, visitors have the choice of several different means of getting around Menorca. These various options fall into two major categories: travelling by public transport or hiring your own vehicle, both with their advantages and disadvantages.
Hiring a car can be more convenient and allows you to explore the entire island in your own time, but having your own vehicle is an extra responsibility and driving on roads you’re not familiar with can be stressful. On the other hand, getting around Menorca using public transport can be tiring and frustrating due to infrequent bus services and the inaccessibility of certain attractions and destinations.
Buses run regularly along the main road that cuts through the centre of the island from east to west, connecting Mahon and Ciutadella. Other buses travel between some of the coastal towns and resorts, linking them with Menorca’s urban centres. Scheduled bus times, as stated on timetables, can be extremely unreliable, particularly on Sundays and public holidays when it’s better to hire your own transport or stay put.
Taxis are a reasonably reliable way of getting around Menorca and they are readily available at taxi ranks or can be arranged through your hotel. However, utilising taxis on a regular basis can be ruinously expensive and if you are going to be making more than a few short journeys, then hiring a car is a more sensible option.
Ferries run between the Balearic Islands and travel back and forth to the Spanish mainland, while there are regular flights from the UK and other European countries to the Balearic region, usually via Barcelona or Madrid.
