Mahon

Menorca’s capital city of Mahon is the island’s main commercial centre, a thriving town that is home to over 20,000 inhabitants and is visited by vast numbers of tourists every year. With its potent ambience, irresistible shopping opportunities, lively social agenda and historical legacy, Mahon is a must for any visitor to Menorca.

Known locally as Mao, Mahon became the capital city in the 18th century when the British moved their headquarters from the ancient capital of Ciutadella to the eastern side of the island. The motivating factor behind this move was Mao’s spectacular natural harbour, which presented significant natural defence and trade advantages and still remains the focal point of the city today.

Mahon exudes a powerful colonial atmosphere and is dotted with impressive examples of 18th century Georgian architecture, with graceful sash windows embellishing stately façades. The central city area is a maze of snaking, narrow streets where visitors can amuse themselves for hours in the pedestrianised shopping lanes, taking in the sights, visiting the atmospheric squares or indulging themselves in the numerous enticing cake shops or cafés. Some of the city’s finest attractions, including the ancient and magnificent church of Santa Maria on Placa Constitució, are located in this central area.

A kaleidoscope of ocean vessels, restaurants, bars and shops that buzz by day and pulse by night, Mahon’s waterfront is its most vital and vibrant area. Most of the city’s dining and nightlife venues are located here along with attractions such as the legendary Xoriguer Gin Distillery and Golden Farm, the colonial mansion of Admiral Lord Nelson.

The Port of Mahon is one of the world’s largest natural harbours, second only in magnitude to Pearl Harbour. The best way to explore the port is on one of the glass-bottomed boats that give regular tours throughout the day, offering unique views of the shoreline and the oceanic life below. Located in Placa Constitució, the striking Esglesia de Santa María la Major is one of Mahon’s finest attractions. Originally constructed in 1287 and rebuilt in the 18th century, the church contains a spectacular organ with four keyboards and over 3,000 pipes.
