Nightlife and bars in Mahon are centralised in the waterfront area, which comes alive after sunset and glitters with lights, reflections and an electric atmosphere. If you are wise, you will be sure to follow the Spanish tradition of an afternoon siesta to prepare yourself for the night ahead.
The best way to start an evening out on the town is to begin with dinner in one of the plentiful eateries lining the waterfront. Tascas (tapas bars) are scattered across Mahon in abundance and enjoying a selection of these traditional Spanish tidbits served with drinks is a good way to get the festivities rolling. Venues down at the port include scores of chic, sleek bars, bistros and cafés, many of which start out with a fairly sedate dinner crowd but then become decidedly more festive as the night goes on. Many of these bars often remain open until the early hours of the morning.
Occupying a prime spot right below the remnants of the ancient city walls, Bar Akkelare is the trendiest and most popular late night venue in Mahon. Stylish with a touch of the macabre, this stone vault opens out on to a garden courtyard and features occasional live jazz acts and contemporary tunes.
Although the nightlife cConsistsing of mainly of late night bars rather than discotheques, there is still plenty of opportunity to dance in Mahon, with many of the bars featuring DJs and live acts, but you will find jazz, blues and salsa music is far more popular in Mahon than the thumping techno that is liberally blared on some of Menorca’s sister islands.
