Menorca for families
Menorca is an ideal family destination offering beautiful, sandy beaches, many of which offer calm bays that are ideal for children. Sea, sand and sun are the basic components to any holiday in the Balearics and a combination that is virtually guaranteed to appeal to all members of the family.
The resort of Son Bou encompasses Menorca’s longest beach at almost two miles long and is an excellent choice for families, offering full facilities and plenty of space. Parents should be aware that the bay can be dangerous under certain weather conditions due to strong currents, so check the flag safety system before swimming. The development of San Jaime is located on the slopes of a hill overlooking Son Bou beach and caters well for youngsters with a water slide, maze, selection of pools and children’s playground.
Binibeca beach is child friendly with a tranquil bay encircled by rocky pools that offer fabulous snorkelling. Pedalos are available for hire here and a beach bar provides sustenance and respite from the sun. Arenal de Castell and Cala Galdana are equally suitable for families, while Cala ‘n Porter has a pretty, sheltered bay surrounded by cliffs and is serviced by a ‘fun train’ that runs regularly between the resort and the beach during daylight hours. An added attraction at this resort is the series of caves known as Cova d’en Xoroi, where children can explore while adults relax over a sunset drink.
Located close to Cala ‘n Forcat, Los Delphines Aquapark makes for a fun family day out. The park has an exciting selection of watery rides, slides and pools, a Jacuzzi, video games, bouncy castle and a restaurant that specialises in fresh seafood. The Secret Garden on the peripheries of Ferreries is a favourite with youngsters and offers magical treasure hunts among the venue’s fruit orchards.
For slightly older children, horseback riding is offered at several resorts and riding clubs, and equestrian shows are a common feature on the island, in keeping with its Spanish heritage. Pony trekking through Menorca’s stunningly beautiful scenery is popular and a wonderful way for families to explore the island together. Nature lovers will also enjoy wandering through the reserve of S’Albufera es Grau, an area rich in flora and fauna.
Located in the development of Urbanisation Son Parc on Menorca’s northern coast, Club Son Parc is the island’s only golf course, complete with clubhouse and restaurant. Junior players are welcome on the course and they can participate in special family and amateur competitions organised by the club provided they have adequate knowledge of the game.
