Museums in Ciutadella

To complement the city’s rich and lengthy history, a couple of excellent museums are located in and around Ciutadella, offering visitors first-hand exposure to the plentiful archaeological relics that have been discovered on the island. These museums convey a wealth of fascinating information through tours and well constructed exhibits.

The Municipal Museum of Ciutadella (Museu Municipal de Ciutadella) is housed in one of the five 17th century bastions of the city’s fortifications and contains an enormous selection of archaeological remnants and ancient artefacts, including pottery, jewellery, weapons and utilities belonging to the various cultures that have inhabited the island over time, such as the prehistoric Talayotic civilisation, Romans and the Moors.

The Diocese Museum of Menorca (Museo Diocesa de Menorca) is located in Ciutadella’s main square, Plaza de Born, within a strikingly beautiful building that was formerly an Augustinian convent. One of Menorca’s most impressive cultural education venues, the museum houses a sizeable and varied collection of artefacts arranged in impressive exhibits that include prehistoric relics, religious objects and Catalonian artworks. Of particular interest are its ancient chalices and collections of medieval and Moorish artefacts.

If you plan on visiting Ciutadella’s museums, then it is a good idea to do so in conjunction with trips to some of the cultural attractions close by, particularly Ciutadella’s 13th century cathedral and the prehistoric village of Naveta d’es Tudons, located just outside of the city. The displays in the museums provide fascinating background information to these ancient historical and archaeological attractions that will significantly enhance your experience at the sites themselves.
