Cabrera Park

The 10,000 hectare Merítimo-Terrestre del Archipiélago de Cabrera National Marine and Land Park lies south of Majorca and is an archipelago consisting of one main island and many other smaller islands and islets. Rich in wildlife and botanical delights, Cabrera Park has a military history and boasts some interesting historical sights.

The main highlight of the island is the wildlife and Cabrera has one of the best preserved coastlines in Majorca. Dolphins can often be seen playing in the crystal clear waters around the coast, while Cabrera is also home to the curious blue-bellied wall lizard and plentiful birdlife, such as peregrine falcons, herring and shag.

Also known as Goat Island, Cabrera was previously a haven for pirates and was a one time prisoner of war camp during the Napoleonic Wars. Some areas of the island are off limits, with fishing on the island strictly forbidden. The 14th century castle overlooking the harbour adds a touch of culture to this otherwise undeveloped island and there are several archaeological sites of interest on land and in the sea.

Cabrera Park also offers some fantastic walking trails with unrivalled panoramic views from the sea cliffs, while the bay of Cala Gandulf houses the magnificent Cueva Blanca (White Cave), where light dances about to create startling reflections. As far as entertainment goes, there is only one small café on the island, so bringing along refreshments is essential.

Getting there
You can reach Cabrera Park by boat from Colònia de Sant Jordi (a one-hour journey) and there are several crossings every day; boats also leave from Porto Petro. You will need permission to visit Cabrera Park, which is easy if you are in a group and use an agency, but more difficult by yourself if you own a yacht as only a certain number of vessels are allowed to moor in the harbour at any particular time.
