Palma de Majorca tourism

With a population of around 300,000 people, Palma de Majorca is home to half the residents of the entire island. The focal point of the town is the huge Gothic cathedral on the picturesque harbour, while ramblas radiate out in all directions, leading to a number of other city attractions.

Many tourists often overlook Palma and sadly miss out on its wonderful attractions and extensive visitor facilities. Many of the city’s main streets are relatively new and were built to open up the city, while the promenade was created to improve the waterfront area and the ring road was added to divert the bulk of the airport traffic heading for the southwest.

These changes have helped shape the Palma of today into a world class cosmopolitan city of exciting entertainment, culture and history. Palma’s National Tourist Office is located at Plaça Reyna 2 and provides tourist information on weekdays and Saturday mornings.

Apart from its obvious historical delights, there is much to tempt tourists in the way of shopping and dining in Palma de Majorca. A huge range of local handicrafts such as leather products, glassware and ceramics are available in an array of quality stores and the city has a fine selection of bars and eateries. Palma is also liberal enough to have a gay and lesbian district in the centre of town.

A busy schedule of events including fiestas (festivals), ballet and theatre productions, concerts and exhibitions transforms Palma de Majorca throughout the. Hotels here are of an excellent standard and many are situated to the west of the town centre and are usually four-star establishments and above, while cheaper alternatives are available in El Terreno and farther out.

Transfer options from the airport to the centre of Palma de Majorca are good and reasonably priced, with a shuttle bus plying the route every 15 minutes. Within the city, the Empresa Municipal de Transports Urbans de Palma de Majorca (EMT) operates an efficient bus service.
