Restaurants
Palma is renowned for the variety and quality of its restaurants, from simple tapas bars near La Llotja and fresh fish harbourside restaurants to the international restaurants of Santa Catalina and traditional Majorcan eateries. Many of Palma’s best and priciest restaurants are in the Sa Llotja part of town to the west of the cathedral and palace.
Sa Llotja is a lively and attractive area with many eateries and after dinner cocktail bars. With a perfect setting near some of Palma’s most treasured sights and stunning bay views, Sa Llotja is more of an interim area of town where people get together for eating and drinking before carrying on to more vibrant parts of the city.
Sa Llotja also has the best tapas bars in town, where you can have anything from olive to fish filled tapas. Tapas come in small portions and are best consumed as a snack or before a main meal; Galician tapas are particularly irresistible. Not far from Sa Llotja you can have a traditional Majorcan fresh fish dish on a harbourside terrace overlooking the beautiful Palma Bay and the Gothic cathedral. Traditional fish restaurants can also appropriately be found above the fish market.
Several international restaurants reside to the west of the old city in the Santa Catalina district within easy reach of Sa Llotja and the harbour. There are top quality Italian, Scandinavian and Indian restaurants in this area that are popular with both locals and tourists.
Palma has a range of traditional Catalan and Majorcan restaurants where dishes range from simple yet delicious Castilian stews to rice and eel based specialities. There are also a number of quality vegetarian restaurants in town and virtually anything can be added to a tapa.
Palma also has a profusion of traditional and trendy cafés, especially along Paseo Marítimo, which runs past the cathedral, where cakes, sandwiches, chocolates and ice cream are all on the menu.
Paseo Majorca has a range of excellent eateries, while El Terreno, an altogether rougher end of town, offers plenty of alternatives as well as a vibrant nightlife.
