Health and safety
Most people who take a holiday in Ibiza do not experience any health and safety problems; however, there are a few precautions you should take when in Ibiza and should you fall sick, treatment is available.
The most common sickness problems among holidaymakers in Ibiza are a consequence of overindulgence. Thousands of party-goers come to the island for a week of excess and many find themselves suffering as a result of going out too much. Colds, sore throats, ear infections and stomach upsets are among the most common complaints.
Should you get sick, your best bet is to look for a pharmacy. These are recognized by their green cross outside and, unlike in many European countries, the pharmacies in Ibiza can prescribe medicines that require a prescription back home. So, if you are after a general antibiotic or contraception, these are readily available over the counter and there are even some twenty-four-hour pharmacies in Ibiza Town.
Most people spend the majority of their holiday in Ibiza on the beach. This is a great way to relax; however, make sure you take some shade and wear a high factor sun screen, particularly children, and take care to drink plenty of bottled water to avoid dehydration. If you are on medication, make sure it won’t react with your exposure to the strong sunlight if you are intent on sunbathing.
You should also take care when swimming and jumping headlong into the water as there can be hidden rocks on some beaches and strong currents.
Always drink bottled water; although the tap water will not kill you, it may give you an upset stomach and put a damper on your holiday. Food hygiene is generally very good; however, caution should be exercised if you’re planning to eat shellfish because it can give you food poisoning.
If you’re planning to be sexually active during your stay, take condoms and use them or risk bringing back more than just your fond memories.
Vaccinations are not required for travel to Ibiza, although it’s worth making sure you are up to date with all your basic inoculations such as tetanus, and it is worthwhile considering getting vaccinated again hepatitis one month in advance of your holiday.
Health care in Ibiza is generally quite good; there are two hospitals and plenty of doctors should you need medical attention.
