Gay & lesbian Ibiza
Ibiza is a magnet for the gay and lesbian community and it has an explosive social scene that will impress anyone looking for a lively holiday. It boasts a wide selection of colourful gay and lesbian friendly venues, clubs, and beaches, making it the perfect holiday destination for expressing yourself freely.
Ibiza’s club culture has helped to develop the island’s acceptance of alternative lifestyles, including a good level of tolerance towards the thriving international gay and lesbian community that arrives on its shores each year. In turn, this has lead to the institutionalisation of some of Europe’s best gay club nights.
There are tour companies that specialise in gay and lesbian package holidays to the island, and a whole range of hotels, guesthouses, bars and restaurants that cater for gay and lesbian holidaymakers. A stroll down La Calle De La Virgen (the street of virgins) in the port area is a must. Complete with S&M shops and piercing studios, this street attracts a large gay crowd.
Playa des Cavallet is the most popular gay beach on the island and provides a long stretch of white sand that can only be described as a gay paradise, complete with gay bars and restaurants, good facilities and no kids in sight. Here you can strip off and get an all-over perfect tan or wrap up in a sarong or shorts; anything goes.
Los Molinos, a small, secluded, pebbled beach in between Ibiza Town and Figueretes is another favourite. There are no facilities here and it can get busy in the summer, but it’s a good place for swimming and nude sunbathing.
The island’s clubbing scene caters excellently for gay and lesbian people looking for a memorable night out. The best on offer is Anfora in Ibiza Town, exclusively gay every night of the week. Many of the other big clubs, such as Privilege, Pacha, and Space, offer gay nights once a week, but you’ll find a mixed crowd of straight and gay clubbers at these parties. La Troya Asesina on Wednesdays at Amnesia is another popular favourite.
The gay and lesbian community is fairly well accepted in Ibiza and it is unlikely that you will suffer intolerant behaviour towards your sexuality. However, as with all destinations and whatever your sexual orientation, it is advisable not to get too frisky in public, especially on the beach, or you may find yourself at the local police station!
