Majorca Menorca Ibiza Formentera

Formentera

Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Islands , is located just off the coast of Ibiza and boasts a length of only 12 miles from tip to tip. It is often referred to as the ‘last paradise of the Mediterranean ’ due to its lack of urban development and limit on the number of resorts that are allowed to be built.

The hippy invasion of the 1960s and ’70s kick started the tourism industry here and left a considerable mark on the island’s atmosphere and lifestyle. Visitors to Formentera are attracted by its breathtaking natural beauty and laid back, easy going atmosphere, a complete contrast to the crowds and commercialism of neighbouring Ibiza . Due to the limited number of hotels, most visitors to the island are day-trippers. The steady flow of holidaymakers means that those wanting to stay longer than a day need to book their hotel well in advance during the summer months.

The island is dominated by stunning beaches of pure white sand that lead down to the clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean . Many beaches are deserted and it is possible to spend a whole day lazing on a beach and never lay eyes on another soul. Its deserted character has made the island popular among nudists, with nude bathing being tolerated on most beaches.

The main resort on the island is Es Pujols, which boasts plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Some of the most popular beaches are spread along the northern peninsula facing towards Ibiza ; most are home to small beach bars that are perfect for watching the sunset.

Formentera Beaches

Formentera’s main attraction is its untouched and often deserted beaches that attract visitors seeking peace and tranquillity, while the waters of Ses Salinas Nature Park in the island’s north have been designated as a World Heritage site.

Culture and History

Formentera boasts a long and fascinating past with reminders of previous conquerors and civilisations spread across the island. This melting pot of different cultures has produced a unique folk culture that is immediately visible upon arrival on the island.

Restaurants

Formentera is well known for its fresh seafood with grilled fish and local fish stews being perennial favourites. Island cuisine differs remarkably from mainland Spanish food, while many restaurants boast a strong German influence.
