Getting around Formentera

Given its small size and the concentration of major tourist areas such as Es Pujols and the northern peninsula, getting around Formentera is a simple affair. The most popular option is to hire a bicycle, preserving the island’s laid back and peaceful atmosphere. For those destinations a little farther a field, scooters and mopeds are also available for hire. Cars can also be hired but they aren’t really needed, while taxis and a simple bus service are also on offer.

Hiring a bicycle for the day from La Savina or Es Pojols will usually set you back anything from €4 to €9 depending on the season. The island is mostly flat, which makes getting around Formentera by bicycle easy, while a network of green routes, a series of cycling routes, are well signposted and lead to all the major attractions. Not only is cycling environmentally friendly and healthy, it also enables you to reach places that are off the beaten path and allows you to take in the beautiful surroundings.

Some popular bicycle routes include: S’Estany route, a one and a half mile loop taking in Ses Salinas Nature Park and Estany Pudent as well as linking Sant Francesc Xavier to Es Pujols and La Sabina; Ses Vinyes route, which connects Sant Ferran with Es Pujols taking in picturesque vineyards; and Ses Illetes route, which runs through protected pine woods and dunes and links the beaches of Es Cavall den Borràs, Ses Illetes and Llevant.

Motor scooters for getting around Formentera can be rented in La Sabina or Es Pojols for around €20 per day and are handy for reaching destinations farther
afield or for the less fit.

Taxis are a popular way of getting around Formentera, but during the peak season it is recommended you book one day before. A taxi ride will cost you around €7.20 for a three mile trip, but it is always wise to confirm the fare beforehand. Taxi ranks are located in La Savina, Sant Francesc Xavier and Es Pujols or you can book by telephone.

Car rental is available, with prices per day working out at around €36. A car will get you to all the main attractions, but the more secluded beaches will remain out of reach unless you park and walk the final leg. A basic bus service plys the main island road, albeit infrequently and at irregular times. Fares are cheap and timetables can be found attached to bus stop signs.
