Majorca Menorca Ibiza Formentera

Ferries to Formentera

Since Formentera is devoid of an airport, ferries are the most common means of arriving on the island. The majority of visitors arrive in Ibiza before crossing over to Formentera by ferry, with most of the island’s visitors being day-trippers who take one of the frequent and reliable ferry services across the narrow three-mile channel that separates the two islands.

Ferries to Formentera leave from both Ibiza Town , or Eivissa, and San Antonio on Ibiza’s southern coast and arrive at Formentera’s only port of La Savina . There are 36 crossings a day during the summer and usually no more than 10 during winter. Due to frequent strong winds during the winter months, the island is occasionally cut off from Ibiza as the passage becomes too dangerous to cross. The channel is also home to strong currents year round and some journeys may take longer than expected.

If you take one of the high speed hydrofoils, the crossing only takes around 30 minutes, while conventional ferries to Formentera take over an hour to complete the journey. At La Savina there are taxis waiting to transport you and your luggage to your hotel.

The first ferries depart at 07:30 in both directions, with the last crossings made at 22:30 by the conventional ferry. There is also a special late night ferry two times a week for people craving a sample of Ibiza nightlife before returning to Formentera later that night. It is also possible to get a ferry from Denia in mainland Spain to Formentera via Ibiza . The Formentera bound ferry leaves Denia at 08:00 , while the Denia bound ferry departs Formentera at 18:30 . The journey takes approximately 3 hours, 30 minutes.

Timetables for ferries to Formentera change frequently during the summer, so it’s best to contact the ferry company directly or check their website for the latest timetable information before arriving. Staff at your hotel will also have information regarding ferry departure and arrival times.
