Bicycle hire
Given its small size and flat geography, the most popular way of getting around Formentera is by bicycle. It is also a good way of helping to preserve the island’s relaxed and unhurried atmosphere. There are several hire outlets based in both La Savina and Es Pujols, with the cost of rental per day varying from €4 to €9 depending on the season.
I n keeping with traditional lifestyle , getting around on a bicycle affords you the opportunity to take in the beautiful natural surroundings as well as allowing you to reach remote places that are not accessible by car or motorised scooter. Many of the secluded beaches lie at the ends of narrow paths that can only be accessed on foot or by bicycle, so if you want to escape the crowds you must be prepared for some gentle cycling.
The local government has striven to promote cycling as the primary form of transport and has built a series of bicycle paths called green routes, which take you through beautiful natural surrounds to all the most popular sites. These routes are well signposted, making it hard to get lost.
Some of the more popular routes include: the S’Estany route, a two-mile loop that takes in Ses Salinas Nature Park and Estany Pudent as well as linking Sant Francesc Xavier to Es Pujols and La Sabina; Ses Vinyes route, which connects Sant Ferran with Es Pujols, taking you past picturesque vineyards; and Ses Illetes route, which runs through protected pine woods and dunes, linking the beaches of Es Cavall den Borràs, Ses Illetes and Llevant.
Temperatures on Formentera can climb to 30C and above during the summer and the island enjoys a mild climate all year round. It is important to carry plenty of water with you when cycling and to wear a helmet and sunscreen. Sometimes riding along the main road is unavoidable and, despite the island’s limited traffic, you should take all necessary safety precautions when doing so.
