Majorca Menorca Ibiza Formentera

Hotels in Formentera

Formentera has so far avoided the kind of beach resort development that neighbouring islands have undergone and as a result hotels in Formentera are limited in number. The island retains its distinctive laid back charm and traditional way of life, while the local government enforces strict development guidelines to ensure Formentera conserves its natural beauty. The lack of fresh water also helps to keep infrastructure development to a minimum.

All this gives Formentera an idyllic and secluded atmosphere as a peaceful alternative to the hustle and bustle of the other Balearic Islands . Most visitors pick out a beach and just stay for the day before returning to Ibiza . If you want to stay longer, then it is wise to book in advance, especially during the summer as the small number of hotels in Formentera means that rooms fill up quickly and can become fully booked during the peak season from July to August. The flipside to this is that most of the hotels in Formentera close down for the winter season from November through to March and hotel discounts can be found at the start or end of the tourist season.

The ferry from Ibiza docks at La Savina, a bustling little town of white houses and a few good hotels situated along the harbour side. Es Pujols is by far the largest tourist resort town and offers a number of self catered apartments and hotels with standard amenities. The town also offers all the usual tourist facilities such as convenience stores, shops, banking facilities, restaurants and bars.

Many people prefer a more secluded location away from the crowds, after all this is one of the main reasons people come here in the first place. Numerous hostels can be found along many of the beaches, with concentrations in Es Calo, Playa de Migjorn and Cala Sahona. Hostel rooms can be taken with or without meals.

Hotel operators in the larger centres such as Es Pujols are likely to speak English but you will find many staff in the smaller locations only speak Spanish and Catalan. Learning a few Spanish phrases will make finding accommodation easier and enhance you holiday experience generally.

Most hotels in Formentera offer a swimming pool, restaurant, children’s playground, satellite TV and telephone
