Hotel booking
There are a limited number of hotels on Formentera as local residents want to maintain the island’s relaxed and traditional atmosphere. This can make hotel booking and finding a room hard during the peak season from July to August and your holiday will require some planning ahead. Prices inevitably go up in the summer; however, you will find there is usually good room availability to suit most budgets towards both the beginning and the end of the summer.
The main resort area is Es Pujols, home to numerous hotels and self catered apartments as well as restaurants, shops, banking facilities, bars, bicycle and car hire, making it an ideal location for families as well as those who want to be close to all the action. Package tourists dominate the tourist scene here, with tour operators getting in quick and booking up many of the rooms at the beginning of the summer. La Savina is also home to several large hotels.
Apart from large hotels and self catered apartments, the other accommodation option is the numerous hostels or small hotels that can be found spread across the island and adjacent to many of the popular beaches. They are usually more intimate and personal in their service and can be taken with or without meals. These are popular among individuals and couples looking for a more relaxing holiday away from the crowds. Camping is not allowed on the island.
When you make a hotel booking, do not expect all hotel owners to speak English; you will need to take this into account when looking around for a room. A Spanish phrasebook will come in handy and it is polite to learn a few local phrases to help you get by. On average, prices are a little more expensive than the other Balearic Islands due to low supply of accommodation and high demand, but the quality is just as good if not better.
Self catered apartments are usually equipped with a kitchenette, bathroom, air conditioning, satellite TV, telephone and communal swimming pool. Most large hotels offer their guests free use of various beach facilities including sailing boats, canoes and windsurfing boards.
